The Shema

Standing on the edge of something new can be both exhilarating and terrifying. The ancient Israelites stood at the Jordan River, looking into the Promised Land, about to leave behind everything familiar. Before they crossed over, Moses gave them words to hold onto: "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one."

Here's what strikes me about this moment: They were about to enter a land where everyone worshiped multiple gods. The daily manna would stop. The pillar of fire would dissipate. All the obvious signs of God's presence they'd grown up with would fade. Moses knew they needed something deeper than circumstances to anchor their faith.

The command was simple but profound: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might." Not just in the sanctuary. Not just when conditions are right. Not just when everyone else is worshiping. With EVERYTHING you are.

Jesus later called this the greatest commandment. It's not complicated, but it is complete. God doesn't want a portion of you. He wants all of you. Your thoughts, emotions, energy, time, talents, dreams, and abilities. That's what true worship looks like.

So here's the question for us today: Is there anything in your life getting the love that belongs to God? Are you worshiping Him only in the easy places, or does your whole life confess that He alone is Lord?
